A freelancer or freelance worker is somebody who is self-employed and is not committed to a particular employer long term. The main difference is that a freelancer has many clients rather than one steady employer. Freelancers are people who specialize in many different fields. This is a web and graphic design blog, so I am going to write about this part.
The term was first used by Sir Walter Scott (1771–1832) to describe a "medieval mercenary warrior" or "free-lance" (indicating that the lance is not sworn to any lord's services, not that the lance is available free of charge). Do you feel like a warior when you are trying to win a project?
There are also many advantages for a freelancer. A person who is self employed can usually choose their own work schedule. Income may be greater than when working for an employer (but sometimes we can stay bored in front of the computer until a project for us appear). A freelancer is his own boss and has the freedom to work independently, from the comfort of home. Freelancers also have the opportunity to pick and choose which jobs are of interest.
There are many websites that offer to connect clients with a freelancer. These services often have many freelancers who bid on particular projects that clients post. Other services simply post projects and allow freelancers to submit a resume and samples of previous work
One of the most popular freelance job is graphic design. It is becoming more of a necessity in modern business. Whether your specialty is web based design or business design, graphic designers are able to break out on their own. A really good graphic designer has unlimited income potential.
As one freelancer to another, I wish you the best of luck with your freelancing career.
